April, 2014:

My Name Is

Today is an awesome day, it finally happened!  Cooper said his own name.  Up until today if you asked him what his name is he would simply nod.  Today he replied with Pooper when asked the same question.  Many of his friends have said Pooper first so we know that a solid sounding Cooper is probably a few more weeks away.

Before being distracted Cooper starts to sing you his current favorite song.  My favorite part of the song is the booty shake he does when singing the “shake it up” line.

Popcorn, popcorn

Put it in a pan…

Shake it up and shake it up

Attack of the Clippers

You better sleep with one eye open when this guy has nail clippers in his hand.  We thought we would try cutting his nails when Nicholas was awake to make the transition smoother when he gets older, but he is just too squirmy.

It is getting to be that time of year when everyday you can enjoy the nice weather outside.  This was our official first time on the blanket under the shade of the tree in our front yard to start off the season.  Yes, in case you were wondering, our big grassy knoll is the little patch between the sidewalk and the street.

Nicholas was showing off his kicking skills with his blanket today.

It has been really neat to see the transition from individual play to playing with friends that happens around 2 years old.  Cooper is slowly starting to realize that he can play with his friends at our many play dates instead of just near them.  Jack and Cooper are hand holding buddies now when we leave toddler group and walk to our cars.

2 Months

Stats – Length: 24″ (85%), Weight: 13lbs 12oz (91%), Head Circumference: 16.25 in. (81%)

Wow, Nicholas  is already 2 months old.  Time really is going by fast.

  • Tummy time: We are just starting tummy time and he isn’t a big fan. It usually triggers crying or sometimes he just goes to sleep.

Tummy time

  • Neck strength: He holds his head up right like a gopher and is much less floppy now.
  • Smiling: We get a few smiles a day from our reserved little guy.  Daddy gets the most with his silly faces.  For some reason the changing table seems to bring out the smiley side of Nicholas.  We guess a clean diaper makes him really happy.

  • Physical:  Nicholas’ eyes have turned to a lighter shade of blue and most of the newborn gray is gone now.  He has lost most of his hair on the top of his head, but still has the longer dark hair mullet section.  The tops of his little ears and shoulders still have some soft dark hair on them.  It appears he has his mother’s toes where the second and third toes are longer than the first, lucky guy 😉  He is wearing size 0-3 month clothes.
  • Eating: He enjoys eating every 2 hours during the day with a longer stretch in the late morning and late afternoon.  He is a great eater and we can complete a feeding in 30-45 minutes.
  • Pooping: Poop comes in threes here.  If you heard one it is worth waiting 10 minutes until all 3 rounds have passed before changing the diaper.  It has turned from the mustard yellow to green in color.  The baseball sized diaper (size 1) gives away if he has peed, we don’t really need the blue stripe to tell us.
  • Sleeping:  Nicholas loves being in a carrier and it usually puts him instantly to sleep.  We are typically out for a couple of hours at 10am each day and Nicholas can sleep through most of the activity if he is in a carrier.  He usually takes a later afternoon nap of about an hour.  Other than those two longer periods during the day he enjoys 10 minute cat naps about an hour after eating.  During the night he will sleep for a 5-6 hour and then 3 hour chunk of time.  Between these two longer sleeping times, usually at 3am, the complete diaper change, feeding, burping and rocking back to sleep can be done in about an hour.

  • Crying:  Nicholas still has a strong set of lungs.  The crying has definitely decreased as he is getting older.  Most often he is upset before falling asleep or when he is hungry.  He is a fan of walks in the carrier, but not a fan of car rides and often cries so hard it becomes silent.  It is horrible to hear and we are still searching for solutions to get him more comfortable.  We have found swinging him in the car seat with a binky can calm him pretty quickly.  He spends most of the day in my arms and evening in his Daddy’s arms since he really does not enjoy being set down.
  • Nicknames: Rob’s favorite is Mr. Snuggles, Cooper loves to call him Baby and I am still searching for the perfect nickname.

Making Pizza

Cooper loves to see what we are doing in the kitchen and always requests to be lifted up to get a better view.  Getting to see the action when Daddy makes pizza on the floor and getting to help is Cooper’s perfect scenario.  Along with the chance to do some sampling of course.

First Smile

We knew this milestone was just around the corner and we have been really looking forward to seeing Nicholas’ first smile.  He did it for Daddy and even repeated it for the camera so we could share it with all of you.

He even one upped the event by following that cute smile by sticking his tongue out.

He still has his serious side too.

Easter Bunnies

For Easter we had our first family of 4 adventure up to Camano Island to visit Grandma and Grandpa.

Cooper checking out his Easter bunny loot with Grandma and Grandpa.

The highlight of the visit was definitely this lawnmower for Cooper.  He LOVES both real and toy lawnmowers.  He will play with a toy lawnmower at a park for hours.

Enjoying a delicious brunch with family, thank you Grandma!

After brunch Cooper headed downstairs with Grandpa, Brian and Daddy to check out some of Grandpa’s toys.

Daddy Time

Mastering the Drink Hold

This evening we made the big move putting Nicholas to sleep in the crib in his room instead of in the pack ‘n play in our room.  Happy to report he still got up to feed in the night, but no more than when he was sleeping in our room. We are hoping we will all start to sleep a little more soundly now.

Blowout Bonanza

“I can sleep anywhere” Nicholas

One of the largest ever in the Kochman house and definitely the largest for Nicholas.  His diaper blowout covered his entire back and since I was nursing him it also got my tank top, belly, boppy pillow and cover.  I had to call for reinforcements as I didn’t know where to start the clean up and fortunately Rob was home.  The next day I had another two blowouts within two hours.  The second one was after I put him in a larger size 1-2 diaper which I was hoping would fix this problem.

A Tear Free Shower

The stars aligned during my shower this morning and both boys were tear free….until I took the picture of Nicholas which woke him up and he started crying.  I still put Cooper in his crib with a book and his stuffed alligator while I take a shower each morning.  He typically throws the book and alligator out of his crib instantly and spends the 30-60 minutes talking, and usually a little whining too.  Nicholas spends shower time in the bouncer in the bathroom with me, just as Cooper did as a baby.

Post rest diaper change bonding time

Our adventure today was to the grocery store for the first time with both boys by myself.  I learned that if I need more than a few grocery items I need to put Nicholas in a carrier to have room in the cart.
